TIAW congratulates the extraordinary individuals who have been selected as recipients of the 2013 TIAW World of Difference 100 Award!

Today we share with you insight and inspiration from selected World of Difference Award recipients. Hassina Sherjan, from Afghanistan, 2012 World of Difference Award recipient in the Education category is featured below.

Share your thoughts on being a 2012 World of Difference Award recipient?

It was a honor be a recipient of the World of Difference Award because I believe we are here to make a difference.  My meaning of life changed, when I felt I could make a different in another individual's life.  It is crucial to promote making a difference in the world; therefore, the World of Difference Award is one of the best ways to bring this important issue to the attention of all.  Making a difference in others' lives is contagious! Once we start, it is not possible to stop or do anything else.  It surpasses all other enjoyments in life!

Why do you think is important to empower women/girls?

We empower women to empower men.  It is not possible to raise boys, who are empowered, have strong self esteem, respect for themselves and others including their wives, and daughters.  When women are empowered, everyone is empowered and therefore, the societies will be moving forward towards a prosperous future.

What inspires you to continue to make a difference?

My inspiration comes from the commitment that the Afghan people have for learning and for a better future.

What is the next thing you'd like to accomplish?

I believe in educating the population in Afghanistan through providing accelerated education for everyone and assisting anyone, who would be interested to earn his/her high school diploma regardless of their age.  I also believe that education is the foundation to a democracy.  Aid Afghanistan for Education provides quality education for 3000 female and 104 male students, currently, and I like to see this number grow to 3 million students in the next five years.

Thank you to the recipients that were very generous with their time and knowledge. We appreciate you sharing your thoughts in this special e-Connections: Global Forum edition.
