President's Message

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

This special edition of e-Connections focuses on the TIAW 35th Anniversary celebration and the 2015 Global Forum and World of Difference 100 Awards.

As TIAW enters its 35th year anniversary, we are pleased to announce that this year’s Global Forum and World of Difference 100 Awards dinner/gala event will be held on October 21-23, 2015 in Washington, DC. This year’s theme is Beyond Sustainability:  Women’s Economic Empowerment, Building for the future on the past! It is appropriate that this theme reflects the ongoing global evolution -- progress and future of economic empowerment of women.

As we celebrate this 35th anniversary, I am reminded of what many of you have shared about your experiences with TIAW at the Global Forum and World of Difference event or through the various programs.  Recurring threads are authenticity, real conversations, long-term business connections, lasting friendships, recognition and celebration, and above all making a difference in economically empowering women locally, regionally and globally.   Just as the world continues to change and grow so does TIAW from its grassroots beginnings in 1980 to the global organization it is today.  In recent years, TIAW has expanded its reach with micro credit village banks, mentoring entrepreneurs through the Cherie Blair Foundation, and helping women leaders to increase representation on boards through Global Board Ready Women (GBRW).  The engagement and collaboration of the board of directors, association and individual members, as well as, our affiliates and sponsors has been instrumental in guiding TIAW in this evolution.   We look forward to all of you joining in the celebration of the TIAW’s 35th anniversary.

As always, we are very excited about the World of Difference awards!  We are honored to have Selima Ahmad from Bangladesh as this year’s Lifetime Award recipient. We are fortunate to have Andrina Lever (past Lifetime Award recipient) as this year’s honorary patron of the Awards. Awards Committee co-chairs, Stephanie MacKendrick and Diane Morris indicate that the Nominations Judging Committee is currently reviewing the many nominations submitted this year and is on track to announce the World of Difference 100 awardees the beginning of May. We are very pleased to have received a large number of nominations, many of them from geographic areas not previously represented.   To those that submitted nominations, we thank you for your support by recognizing someone you believe is making a difference to economically empower women!

Please see the location and hotel information in this issue so that you can make your flight and hotel reservations, obtain visas and other logistical requirements.    Join us as a sponsor for this special event and help us to continue to be a leading force in economically empowering women.

Remember to join or renew your individual or association membership so that you can take advantage of the many benefits available to you in support of economic empowerment for women, including discounted registration fees for the Global Forum and World of Difference Awards dinner/gala.

I look forward to celebrating with you in October!

Best regards.

Margaret (Peg) Weir

TIAW, President

Lifetime Achievement Award-

Selima Ahmad

The International Alliance for Women (TIAW) is delighted to announce Selima Ahmad as the 2014-2015 TIAW World of Difference Lifetime Achievement Award recipient. This prestigious honor is bestowed each year upon a woman of great achievement, whose actions have truly made a difference globally in the economic empowerment of women.

Ms. Ahmad's contributions are greatly admired and recognized internationally: as a role model for women in business through her work at the Nitol-Niloy Group, as a member of the board of directors of the Sonali Bank Limited and as a tireless champion of women entrepreneurs through her work as the founder of the Bangladesh Women Chamber of Commerce and Industry. She has enabled women to aspire to a brighter future, to engage as entrepreneurs and to also move beyond micro businesses into more ambitious ventures, all within a society that faces significant hurdles for women in the norms of tradition and culture.

World of Difference Awards Honorary Patron - Andrina Lever

The International Alliance for Women (TIAW) announced that Andrina Lever, an internationally-recognized advocate for women entrepreneurs, has been appointed Honorary Patron of the 2014-2015 TIAW World of Difference Awards.

Throughout her career, Ms. Lever has seized every opportunity to help promote the economic empowerment of women, playing an instrumental role in the establishment in 1996 of the APEC Women Leaders Network as well as organizing the private sector component of the first two-and largest ever-Canadian women trade missions between the United States and Canada. She has used her time, energy, connections, and resources to develop and deliver training and courses for women entrepreneurs, government agencies and major suppliers. She has chaired numerous government committees, promoting advocacy and good policy for women in business, helping women find better access to finance, technology, information, markets, and training.
