WAM DC, a chapter of WAM-International, is a professional association established to bring together women in the microfinance industry in the Washington, D.C. area. WAM- International’s mission is to advance and support women working in microfinance through education and training, by promoting leadership opportunities, and by increasing visibility of their participation and talent while maintaining work/life balance.
On Thursday, March 4 at 7:30pm(all time zones) in theaters across the United States and Canada, CARE will present its 2010 International Women’s Day event, Half the Sky LIVE. This one-night only event is the perfect celebration in advance of International Women’s Day, which falls on March 8th.
Inspired by moving stories from the critically-acclaimed book “Half the Sky” by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, which follows the stories of extraordinary women around the world as they struggle to overcome oppression. Kristof and WuDunn focus on three major problems facing women – sex trafficking, maternal mortality and violence against women. They argue that empowering women is the key to alleviating poverty and uplifting communities in developing countries.
The Half the Sky LIVEwill feature an uplifting night of music, celebrity discussion and the world premiere of “Woinshet,” a powerfulshort film co-directed by Academy Award® winner Marisa Tomei that chronicles the struggles of an Ethiopian woman who triumphs over violence and discrimination. The event will feature appearances by India.Arie; Maria Bello; Michael Franti; Dr. Helene Gayle; Angelique Kidjo; Nicholas Kristof; Rachel Mayanja (UN): Sarah, Duchess of York; Marisa Tomei; Sheryl WuDunn and other notables. Their message will be spread across North America to stimulate thought and debate on the issue of women and girls’ empowerment worldwide.
