In terms of the challenges that women face in the hospitality industry, Ms. Morgan had this to say, “I think they are very similar to those faced by women in the restaurant industry with not just the early leadership years but decades being represented predominantly by men.  However, over the last 10 years there have been some strong in-roads paved by some very talented women who have been rewarded by position advancement.  There clearly is more room at the top and I believe that talent and performance regardless of gender reaps rewards. The real benefit for the advancement of women comes when you can engage with a company that exemplifies an inclusive culture with a commitment to excel.”

To overcome challenges, “I have always tried to approach my career with a sense of professionalism and balance - a life beyond work adds a sense of purpose.  Additionally, I think that it is important to live by the Golden Rule - if I expect advancement based on commitment and achievement, I need to inclusively reward the same,” she advises.

For women who are just starting out in the hospitality industry, she has this advice for them: “Learn as much as you can and participate in as many relevant activities as possible.  This includes participating and contributing to organizations such as yours.  The measures of success extend beyond the corporate brick and mortar- a sense of community is very important. Additionally, with each move up the ladder, attempt to jettison the areas of marginal interests and emphasize the path of interest and natural talent.
